How I work with students & parents using Zoom

January 23, 2018

People sometimes ask how I can work with students and parents across Canada.

Well, the same way business people, academics, health professionals, and many other people have been working for years with people who are not in their immediate area – by phone, email, and online via videoconference.

The videoconference platform I like best is called Zoom.  Zoom is like Skype, only better.  In fact, Zoom is ranked #1 in customer reviews, and over 750,000 companies use it.  Everyone I know who uses it loves Zoom!

Here’s how it works:  I send a meeting invitation to you via email.  You follow the directions in the email, and click on the link.  Zoom will download automatically.

Here’s what pops up on your screen:

Then, when we start our chat, you will get a big ol’ view of me (and a little one of yourself), and I’ll have a nice big view of you, and a little one of myself.

Here’s an example of a screen shot of me (little picture up top) and someone I’m working with in the big photo.

The best part about Zoom is that I can share my screen with you.  This comes in super handy when I want to cover something visual, or show you more in-depth information, or if I want to demonstrate how to do something, like maybe show you how to look up the kinds of classes you’d take if you were to major in marine biology.

When I share my screen, both people are reduced to mini screens, but we still can see and hear each other talking.

In this example, I’m sharing my screen and talking about the importance of knowing how to make good decisions (because there are a lot of important ones coming up soon for high school students!).

It’s as simple as that.

And the best part is you don’t have to venture out into the cold, drive for miles or sit in traffic, pay for parking, and find an office.  You can get into your comfy clothes, grab a coffee or tea, and find a quiet place at home to have a chat.  Heck, you don’t even have to shower if you don’t want to!

Of course, a lot of work can also be done on the phone and via email, but I think it’s important for both of us to put a face with a voice, and Zoom is a great way to do that.

I hope that helps to explain how it works.
